The River Isbourne is an important part of the life and history of Wormington. This section will grow over time - especially with your help, memories, and photographs. Do you remember swimming in the mill race?
Pollution - we all know that the UK is one of the worst countries in Europe for water quality. Phosphates and Nitrates are to be found at above normal levels in the Isbourne, these primarily stem from treated and untreated sewage, fertilizers and detergents. These levels lead to harmful algae blooms, depleting oxygen, disrupting the ecosystem and harming aquatic life.
Untreated sewerage carries bacteria and parasites, risking diseased like diarrhoea, dysentery, and typhoid. Rising pollution threatens 10% of freshwater species and harms fish populations.
2 sets of testing equipment were purchased by the Parish Meeting and 2 volunteers from our parish are currently involved in monitoring the levels of Phosphates and Nitrates at two spots of the River Isbourne. These results are used to monitor the state of the River Avon and its tributaries.
